Dowden – Urias [Afterglow]

Afterglow opens the summer season by welcoming Dowden to the label for his debut single 'Urias'. Hailing from Toronto, Canada but currently calling Berlin home, Dowden has been one of his country's premiere progressive house producers for the better part of a decade. Although recording under a different alias initially, the Dowden moniker emerged in 2017 on the strength of early tracks like 'Grindavik' and 'Paladin'. Support from genre tastemakers Cid Inc, Guy J and Hernan Cattaneo soon followed, as did releases on trendsetting imprints such as Clubsonica, EDGE, Juicebox Music, Mango Alley, Meanwhile and John OO Fleming’s Joof Recordings. This first half of the year has proved to be prolific for Dowden, while primarily focusing on remix projects, the Berlin resident's 2023 resume has been highlighted by his 'Coil / Spiral' collaborations with Argentinean upstart Ric Niels. Now, unveiling his first solo original of the year, Dowden makes an impressive Afterglow debut with 'Urias'.

As a recent favourite of Gai Barone, 'Urias' finds Dowden composing with a strong sense of space. Instantly seductive, its looping hypnotism and subtle musicality never fail to command your attention, driving each other into a whirlpool of emotions, and in turn making for a flexible club track that should fair well in deeper and progressive oriented sets. A tense break sits at the core of the piece, carefully building drama as metallic motifs percolate in a slowly expanding landscape, perfectly setting course for a heady finale. With ‘Urias’ Dowden makes an impressive Afterglow debut, one which continues his journey across the electronic cosmos, and continues his reign as one of Canada's most beloved progressive house talents.
