Dmitry Molosh – Compass EP [Beatfreak Recordings]

D-Formation's Beatfreak Recordings continues a strong Spring season by welcoming Dmitry Molosh back to the label for his debut EP. The Belarus based artist is fresh off the release of his 'Ambition' EP for Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music. Also owning releases on Nick Warren's Hope Recordings, Cid Inc's Replug Records and Guy Mantzur’s Plattenbank Records, Dmitry now presents his first original project for Beatfreak entitled 'Compass'.

Beginning the title cut Dmitry explores the darker more techno inspired side of his studio repertoire. Tough and punchy yet remarkably fluid, it’s well carved low end provides momentous swing while ethereal hooks and harmonic overlays fill in the framework. Stripping down into the main break, the melodic narrative expands for what is tension filled interlude of the highest order. Buzzing electronics provides waves of drama before a massive drop sparks a percussion finale.

The companion piece ‘Edge’ follows a similar sonic ethos but with more of a lean into pure progressive territory. Beginning with a warm, rolling groove the piece moves with discernible momentum as layers of drums and rugged rhythms converge for a hearty rhythmic core. Charming harmonies and elegant atmospheres flow beautifully into an expansive centrepiece, as clustered motifs provide an emotional spike, perfectly foreshadowing an electric third act. Another heady creation from Dmitry, rounding out what is an impressive debut EP on Beatfreak Recordings for the Belarus based artist. Highly recommended.
