Cardios Then 33 – Cowboy Acid [Port 81 Records]

Port 81 Records begins the summer season by welcoming Cardios Then 33 back to the label for a new EP. Hailing from Santiago de Cali, the Colombian artist has the unique distinction of providing the inaugural release on the label with ‘Humble Ground’. As a core part of the imprint Cardios Then 33 has appeared on four of the labels first six releases, while also turning in stellar work for Polyptych and Black Code. Now fresh off a remix for David Norena's 'The Moment of Life', Cardios Then 33 makes a welcome return to Port 81 with 'Cowboy Acid'.

Regarded for his unique sound profile it's the cutting edge designs of the title track which lead the release off. Beginning on a foundation of tight beats it's crunchy design and astral synth motifs slowly begin to saturate your senses. A distinctive vocal narrative adds character and grit leading into the break, perfectly offsetting luminous tones before coming to full fruition and segueing into a powerful finale.

The companion piece 'Wildest Dreams' follows suit with its ominous yet fiery energy. Darker undertones power the punishing groove while offset stabs and crunchy designs should make for some memorable dance floor moments. Warped and wonderful in all the right ways, the break adds further intrigue through bassy rumblings, rugged synths and flurries of drums, the latter of which sparks a deadly drop and driving third act. It rounds out two distinct and creative tracks from Cardios Then 33, who continues to push the boundaries of progressive techno with his unique approach. Highly recommended.
