Whirl – Time Arc [ICONYC]

John Johnson's ICONYC opens the month of December by welcoming Whirl to the label for their debut EP. Based in Sweden, Whirl has achieved measurable success since first emerging in 2010. Berlin's Steyoyoke and Steyoyoke Black have been primary landing spots for his melodic techno sound, while the underground's tastemakers continue to champion his work. Now, following a contribution to Atlant's 'Voyager III' collection, Whirl makes his ICONYC debut with a two track showcase entitled 'Time Arc'.

Beginning with 'Aevum' Whirl crafts a dramatic piece complete with emotional and timeless narratives. Following a DJ friendly intro it’s a selection of prophetic arps and quirky effects which provide a cosmic storyboard over a bed of pulsating beats and driving percussion. The mood shifts during a memorable break as cinematic overlays deliver poignant moments, elevating mood while releasing tension, before eventually getting washed away in a rush of beats and drums for a thumping finale.

Meanwhile, on ‘Arc’ Whirl showcases a similar sonic storyboard as techno inspired beats and devilish designs converge for a dark beginning. Looking to bring greater emotional depth, the main break melts down to symphonic synth phrasing, allowing the listener to relish in its colourful glow, as the groove returns for a dark effects laden conclusion. Two massive tracks from Whirl here, an artist who makes an impressive ICONYC debut, while capping off an impressive 2022. Highly recommended.
