Praveen Achary's Juicebox Music returns showcasing new interpretations of Weird Sounding Dude's 'Arcade'. Released in April of this year the five track artist EP was a showcase for one of India's most creative talents. Diverse across five tracks, it touched the hearts of electronic music fans with its blend of traditional progressive house, deep house and melodic techno. Looking to keep the spirit of the EP alive, Juicebox Music now invites Subandrio, Terje Saether, Esensides, Nomad In The Dark and Pro4ound to re-invent the tracks.

Leading the release off is one of progressive music’s brightest stars in Subandrio. The Sri Lankan artist got his career off to an amazing start in 2015 with an EP for Cid Inc’s Replug Records. It was this showcase that paved the way for his rugged sound, as he then went on to appear on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music. Now one of the scenes foremost talents he returns to Juicebox with a stunning interpretation of ‘Blue In Grey’. There’s something magical in Subandrio’s sound, an amazing balance of character and electricity that you just don’t hear much in this day of ultra clean production. It’s this unique combination which gives his music such a compelling feel and It’s certainly evident in his ‘Blue In Grey’ interpretation. No doubt destined for the sets of Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren, it’s a production that will stick with you long after the night is over.

Next up and making his label debut is Terje Saether. The Norwegian artist is widely recognized for his unique blend of house and techno. His genre defying sound has remained fresh over the years and his discography features releases on Bedrock, Connaisseur Recordings, Darkroom Dubs and Hope Recordings as a result. Now making his first appearance on Juicebox, Terje provides a deadly rendition of ‘Boundless’. Considered by many as a master storyteller, the Norwegian begins the journey with a broken beat intro before transitioning into a traditional 4x4 groove. What follows is nothing short of brilliant as wobbly acid lines and introspective atmospheres set the stage for an epic eleven minute romp. The second act is where the magic happens for me, stripping down as acidic tension builds, while finely tuned percussion brings all the dynamic flair you could ever want. Timeless music from Terje that should find its way into a wide assortment of DJ boxes.

Returning to Juicebox are the Esensides duo who are fresh off EPs for Beat Boutique and ICONYC. Vasilis Alexiou aka Billy Alex & Vaggelis Tasoudis make up the Greek duo and first appeared on Juicebox in August of 2016 with their ‘Drift Away’ EP. Perhaps their return is long overdue but it’s been well worth the wait as they’ve turned in an exceptional remix of ‘Spectral Sculpt’. Deep and tranquil from the outset it’s a captivating storyboard where the fine details make all the difference. Astral effects, ghostly vocals and smooth, meditative arps highlight the first act before an unconventional metallic lead seals it’s unique appeal.

Long time progressive music fans will certainly be familiar with Ephraim Dean aka Nomad In The Dark. The US artist was tipped by Sasha as 2009's breakthrough producer and he went on to appear on Nick Warren’s Hope Records and Balance Music. A recent resurgence came under a new moniker The Antelope which had the distinction of releasing the first album on Bog’s burgeoning Atlant imprint. Now returning to his nostalgic guise of Nomad In The Dark and making his Juicebox Music debut, Ephraim presents a tasteful interpretation of ‘Arcade’. Rich in character and rhythmic qualities, it’s definitely one to get your head bobbing or dance floor moving. The afro tinged drums are quite lovely, adding a modern flair while the eventual reveal of the original’s main theme is captivating to say the least.

Rounding out a trio of Juicebox debutants is Pro4ound who progressive music fans may be familiar with from his releases on Intricate and Massive Harmony. Hailing from Boksitogorsk, Pro4ound is part of Russia’s new breed in electronic music talent and continues to make his mark with a superb take on ‘Boundless’. Robust yet charming, it’s a mix that carries substantial weight with its bulbous kicks and meaty low end. The emotive qualities add the perfect contrast however, taking the edge off and transporting you to a heavenly place during the main break.
Rounding out the release is Weird Sounding Dude himself who contributes a dub version of ‘Under The Moon’. Although staying true to the main themes it’s deep and sultry qualities are a radical departure from the more deliberate techno sensibilities which anchored the original. It makes for an enchanting affair that sounds tailor made for late night play, perfectly capping off an expansive remix edition for Juicebox Music. A collection which ticks a lot of boxes, resulting in a release that is sure to find favour with both old and new school progressive music fans. Highly Recommended.
