Vazik – What It Takes [ICONYC]

Continuing a strong start to the year John Johnson's ICONYC welcomes Vazik back to the label for his debut EP. The Mexican artist first appeared on the US imprint in October of 2018 with a remix of Joal's 'Luftklavier'. Also laying claim to releases on Asymmetric Recordings, Flow Records and Mirabilis Records, Vazik now lands back on ICONYC with 'What It Takes'.

Often sitting comfortably between progressive house and techno, Vazik’s music tends to permeate both scenes quite effectively. The lead track ‘Astronave’ does exactly that with it’s tough groove, dynamic percussion and driving acid lines. Commanding chord stabs soon steal the air for grandiose moments, pushing the ethos into peak time territory, before one final break adds all the dramatic tension you could ever want.

The companion piece and title selection ‘What It takes’ carries similar drive and energy but utilizes an amazing vocal to carry the narrative. Incredibly fresh, it blankets the chugging groove at opportune moments, while cascading tones add an eerie air to the proceedings. The vocal commands further attention across the main break, bringing moments of euphoria and ultimately setting up an energetic finale. It rounds out two massive creations from Vazik who has certainly gotten his 2020 off to a great start with this excellent EP. Highly recommended.
