Roman Kandel – Mahasim [Deepwibe Underground]

Opening the winter season in style, Deepwibe Underground welcomes Roman Kandel to the label for his debut EP. As an alias created by popular Spanish artist Adrian Roman, the new moniker has made significant strides since first appearing with releases via Bonzai Progressive and Univack four years ago. A sparser release schedule has seen an increasing demand for output and led to recent offerings via One Of A Kind and Annuna Music. Now making a welcome debut on Deepwibe Underground, Roman Kandel presents a two track offering entitled 'Mahasim'.

Beginning with ‘Mahasim’ Roman explores the contemporary spectrum of progressive minded house. It’s warm, fluid groove is perfectly contoured, rolling forward with discernible momentum, as finely tuned percussion, buoyant arps and poignant tones lead into the main break. Glowing and cavernous, the centrepiece acts as the tracks emotional core, radiating positivity through misty pads and hazy textures, as delicate pianos slowly unveil the lead theme as the beats drop for a classy conclusion.

The companion piece ‘Personalitet’ moves into deeper territory and acts a perfect complement to it's predecessor. Beginning with a warm, inviting vibe the creation evolves through mounds of bass, waves of organic drums and arpeggiated fragments. Timely stabs add nicely to it's rhythmic core, before further modulation across the main break adds a otherworldly mood to the narrative. Eventually broken up by a creeping drum roll, the beats drop at an opportune moment for a finale that is both groovy and cosmic. It rounds out a superb Deepwibe Underground debut for Roman Kandel, setting up what should be an incredible 2021 for the talented Spaniard. Highly recommended.
