NuFects continues their comeback this week with a brand new EP on Yegor Tsarkov’s Specific Music. Hailing from Colombia, Johny Cortez and Carlos Lopez make up the NuFects production duo and have previously appeared on Clubsonica Records and ICONYC. The duo is back in the spotlight with recent releases on Astrowave, Capital Heaven and their comfortable home of OneStar, where they recently remixed Paul Lennar. Now making their debut on Specific Music, NuFects presents their ‘The Nun’ EP.
Recent support from Guy J and Laurent Garnier has lifted NuFects to greater heights and ‘The Nun’ looks to continue that positive momentum. Strong storyboarding and unique design makes this one of the Colombian duo’s most compelling creations to date. Dark beats and a buzzing underbelly stand out immediately, perfectly setting the stage for waves of fiery percussion and ominous pads. The main break advances the narrative with sinister vocal elements which prove to be incredibly dramatic, flowing through timely modulation, before getting washed away with muted kicks and smart tonal designs. Very powerful stuff from NuFects.
The companion piece ‘Smokescreen’ sits in a similar sonic space with a dark, intriguing vibe. Tight punchy beats and a rippling low end set the piece in motion before an array of cosmic effects surround the framework. Smooth and effortless in feel, it’s a seamless eight minute journey into hypnotic motifs and crunchy rhythms. Gentle overlays invoke a unique emotional response, most prominently during the break which highlights the piece. Two stunning tracks from NuFects who are most definitely back in the progressive music spotlight with their recent work. A great signing for Yegor Tsarkov and Specific Music who continue to be one of the more consistent labels around.
