Montw – Mantle / Chronal / Bloom [Higher States]

Presenting their second release of the year, Roger Martinez’s Higher States welcomes Montw to the label for his debut EP. Since first appearing in 2017, Russian artist Stanislav Prokofiev aka Montw has enjoyed a steady rise within the global progressive house scene. Noted for his blend of hypnotic rhythms and captivating atmospheres, the Moscow resident has excelled at creating his own brand of electronic futurism, making him one of the more unique artists to emerge from Russia across the last decade. Juicebox Music, Mango Alley and WARPP have been vehicles for his creative swell over the last three calendar years, in turn earning support from genre tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren. After opening the year with his latest Mango Alley project ‘Zemer’, a single recorded alongside Italian duo Moodintrigo, Montw now makes his much anticipated Higher States debut with a three-track showcase ‘Mantle’.

The enthralling sounds of ‘Mantle’ crash in and set any preconceived ideas of Montw’s music alight, forecasting rubbery basslines, jet force propulsions and a hypnotic percussive cadence. It’s quirky synth modulation and glacial effects make for a break that is both memorable and emotive, before melting down into a grooved-out finale.

‘Chronal’ follows in fine style and further hammers down Montw’s elusive vision, with a groovy club-effective quality carrying the piece throughout. Chunky sequences of rhythm, glacial pads and granular textures travel to the very edges, while maelstroms of deconstructed vocals, shimmering synths and contorted effects highlight a high-octane second act.

The third and final selection ‘Bloom’ finds Montw crafting a feel-good excursion that’s nicely suited for those uplifting club moments. Booming yet dreamy, its swing-heavy hypnotism instantly commands your attention, through snatches of fiery synth mutations and quirky chord stabs, eventually culminating in a finale of effects-laden euphoria.
