Matchy – Dios Kouroi [ICONYC Noir]

As the seasons shift John Johnson relaunches the ‘Noir’ division of his ICONYC imprint. Honours on the label’s resurgent release go to German artist Matchy. The Berlin based producer has been a creative force in the melodic house and techno scene. Releases on BeatFreak Recordings, KATERMUKKE, Stil Vor Talent and Suara highlight his discography while a unique DJ style has seen him continually delight crowds at Sisyphos and Katerblau. Now having the distinction of reinvigorating ICONYC’s Noir division, Matchy presents his ‘Dios Kouroi’ EP.

Comprised of two cuts it's the tough, punchy beats of 'Pollux' which get the release underway. A distinct tonal theme slowly burrows into your subconscious as rugged stabs and dynamic drum fills complement the framework. Rhythmically tight throughout, the narrative shifts as the second act unfolds with a brief but highly emotive moment during the centrepiece. Not looking to get too grandiose, it is offset with fuzzed out stabs before a wave of industrial noise sparks a bouncy finale.

The companion piece 'Castor' is equally powerful with its ferocious drive and spacey motifs. The stark contrast is quite magical, as spiralling arps and esoteric fragments play off the dark foundation and fiery effects. Not lost in all this is a moment of serenity during the break, perfectly setting up a powerful roll and even bigger drop. Definitely a composition to move an up for it dance floor and one which rounds the release out on a strong note.

An auspicious beginning for ICONYC’s ‘Noir’ division as its parent label is already a burgeoning force in the electronic underground, look for 'Noir' to follow suit. Highly recommended.
