Lost Rhythm – Aetheria [Steyoyoke]

Lost Rhythm makes his much anticipated Steyoyoke debut with ‘Aetheria’. 2021 proved to be a breakout year for Berlin based artist Sal Schenkel aka Lost Rhythm. On the strength of two quarter one releases Lost Rhythm saw support from electronic music tastemakers Mind Against and Solomun, perfectly setting up the Berlin residents most recent studio creation ‘Ara’. Released in October, the single track offering found Lost Rhythm at his creative best, working timeless astral themes over modern techno frameworks, a six minute excursion that once again saw praise from some of the underground’s most influential figures. While Lost Rhythm has primarily kept his original material exclusively for his Lostium imprint, he now follows on from a near one-year hiatus by adding storied imprint Steyoyoke to his resume with ‘Aetheria’, alongside a remix from MPathy.

‘Aetheria’ finds Lost Rhythm operating at the peak of his creative powers. Fuelled by emotion and groove; its warm rippling basslines, liquid-like rhythms and tight percussive arrangements resonate on a transcendent level. Meditative and melodic across the first movement, Lost Rhythm continues to push the narrative with choir-like overlays, arpeggiated fragments and ethereal effects creating a bridge into the main break. Sitting in a poignant yet thought provoking space, a stunning melodic narrative captivates as the interlude evolves, flowing through wispy effects, fluttery motifs and colourful textures as tasteful modulation spearheads a groove-centric drop and driving, heads down finale.

The release concludes with Steyoyoke stalwart MPathy returning to the label with the lone remix of ‘Aetheria’. Now approaching ten years as a producer, Berlin based MPathy has certainly found a comfortable home on Steyoyoke, with fifty-one of his fifty-four discography credits coming courtesy of the German imprint. Always a creative remixer, MPathy takes inspiration from the original, remodeling the track into a dizzying dance floor slam. Complete with bright stabs, a spectacular effects narrative, hyperactive rhythms and a forest of fresh sonic details, it’s an adrenalized energy-rush for the ages – one which makes Lost Rhythm’s Steyoyoke debut all the more special.
