Joal – Luftklavier [ICONYC]

Joal returns to John Johnson’s ICONYC this week with his first single for the label entitled ‘Luftklavier’. Based in Berlin by way of Portugal, Joal first appeared on the US imprint in November of last year with a remix of ‘We All Heart’ by Robert R. Hardy. Now following remixes for Pena’s Flow Vinyl and Plano B Records the Portuguese artist presents his first single for ICONYC alongside remixes from Vazik and Norris Division.

Known for his cross pollinated productions Joal presents a unique fusion of techno and progressive house here. Perhaps sitting a bit closer to the former it’s tough, punchy groove comes with incredible bounce. Adorned with a stunning array of bleepy electronics and charged percussion it’s momentum builds quickly. As percussive flurries rise a clever tonal theme takes centre stage, flowing through a storyboard of unpredictable modulation, before shifting energy into a drummy finale. Highly creative stuff from Joal.

First up on the remixes is Sounds Of Earth label boss Vazik who makes his ICONYC debut here. As one of Mexico’s most widely recognized electronic music talents Victor always seems to be operating at a creative peak. Here he takes ‘Luftklavier’ into minimalistic territory with a tough, percussive workout that’s geared for a clued up dance floor. It’s swollen low end carries a lovely pulse while a set of siren-like wails are both distinctive and emotive, most notably during a cinematic, almost icy break which ultimately highlights the piece.

The release concludes with another ICONYC debut in Norris Division. Based in Phoenix, Arizona, Justin Shiba and David Epstein make up the Norris Division production duo. Upon debuting on Canal Auditif in July of this year the duo then found a home on Re:Sound Music where they have appeared three times, recording three originals and a remix. Now making their ICONYC debut the duo round the release out with a smooth rendition of ‘Luftklavier’. There’s a distinctly classic or almost retro progressive feel to this with a pumping, energetic groove and catchy rhythmic core. Dark stabs add a dramatic tone, building further tension during a well executed break that’s sure to capture the imagination of your dance floor. A lovely interpretation from Norris Division which caps off another excellent outing for John Johnson’s ICONYC. Highly Recommended.
