Gorkiz & FMENEZS – Journey to Nowhere [Transensations Records]

The latest release from Transensations Records features a fresh collaborative EP from Gorkiz & FMENEZS. Having both earned measurable success in their respective solo career's, the Brazilian duo have collectively showcased their music on Balkan Connection, Stellar Fountain, Stereo Recordings and Us & Them. Now pairing up for the first time, Gorkiz & FMENEZS present their 'Journey to Nowhere' EP alongside a remix from Kaito Aman.

Spread across three tracks it's the tranquil sounds of the title selection which get the journey underway. On a bed of broken beats and detailed percussion comes cinematic spheres and glowing synth swells. It's a narrative which evolves beautifully into the break where the emotional core of the piece ultimately resonates most highly. Astral sweeps and radiant tones highlight the centrepiece nicely before perfectly seguing back into a solemn finale. The second selection 'Umbra' follows a similar sonic ethos but carries a peak time approach. It's boundless energy is undeniable, moving forward with a dominate air, delivering a smooth yet bouncy cadence and cinematic style overlays which continue to deliver waves of emotion with each successive loop. The release is rounded out with the smooth, free flowing sounds of 'Wyda', which perhaps appropriately has the most reflective feeling. The main break sort of encompasses the entire release in a way; warm, emotive and timeless but it's impassioned feel definitely peaks in a profound way. I do hear a slight Andre Sobota influence in this one which is a great thing and it would certainly go down well in the morning hours.

The lone interpretation of 'Journey To Nowhere' is provided by Kaito Aman who makes his label debut here. Based in São Paulo, the Brazilian artist has had a strong year with standout releases on Antrim's Or Two Strangers, 3rd Avenue, Soundteller Records and Balkan Connection's BC2 division. Now landing on Transensations he completes this all Brazil package with a superb rendition of 'Journey To Nowhere'. Backed by punchy beats and a warm, rippling groove comes charged rhythms and spacious percussion. It’s powerful drive is layered with haunting atmospheres, elevating as the main break commences. There's a lovely sense of restraint yet still quite powerful from an emotional perspective, a classy combination of bass swells and gleaming tones make for a gorgeous centrepiece, before a tasteful drop keeps things on the right side of cool. An excellent remix from Kaito which rounds out a stunning release from Transensations, a label growing at a remarkable rate, not only in their home country of Brazil but in the global progressive landscape. Highly recommended.
