Frank Duke – Chasing Shadows [Magician On Duty]

Magician On Duty continues a strong summer season by welcoming Frank Duke back to the label for a new single. The US artist first appeared on the US imprint in March of 2017 with a contribution to the label's 'You Are Music, We Are One' collection. November of the same year then saw Frank return with 'Bonsai' which featured on the label's highly regarded One Year Anniversary collection. Now following a 2018 release for Typ3 Records, Frank returns to Magician On Duty with 'Chasing Shadows' alongside a remix from Draso.

Beginning with exotic drums, waning tones and aquatic arps, it's quite enchanting from the outset. Warm bass swells soon dominate the foundation, flowing through nostalgic chord changes, as clustered melodies and vocal fragments breathe beautifully in organic space. The main break offers a shift in narrative, quite indistinct, leaving a lot to the imagination rather than being overt and ultimately setting up a gorgeous finale.

The lone remix on the release is provided by Draso who makes his label debut. The Australian artist lays claim to an impressive discography, highlighted by releases on Seven Villas, MNL, Wide Angle Recordings and Traum. Now debuting on Magician On Duty he rounds the release out with a gorgeous rendition of 'Chasing Shadows'. The groove opens up quite a bit here for a more spacious and airy feel. Effervescent swells come in waves adding impassioned moments, while finely tuned percussion and melodic fragments trail off in the back drop. A lovely remix from Draso which caps off a great September release for Magician On Duty. Highly recommended.
