DJ Paul (AR) – 1987 [Deepwibe Underground]

Deepwibe Underground enters the summer season by welcoming DJ Paul to the label for his debut EP. The Argentinean producer has been a fixture of his country's electronic underground for almost three decades. In addition to heading up Metro.FM, Paul has also shared the booth with Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Sasha, Dave Seaman and Deep Dish while showcasing his music on Balkan Connection, TrybesOf, Selador and Sudbeat. Increasingly prolific in recent years, DJ Paul now lands on Deepwibe Underground with a three track showcase entitled '1987'.

Beginning with the title track Paul explores his pure progressive roots with a warm, hypnotic creation that’s sure to get your dance floor moving. Mountainous bass and corky beats power the foundation while a bevy of meditative motifs soon surround the framework. Indistinct vocal edits, aquatic arps and clustered chimes are a feast for the senses as the track builds into a series of chord stabs as the break approaches. Rhythmic and tranquil in equal measure, the centrepiece does wonders for building anticipation without going unnecessarily big, keeping it's sleek vibe well intact for the finale.

'Arrhythmia' follows with a similar design profile and has an equally enticing trippy, percussive quality. Powerful beats and a rippling underbelly make for a dance floor friendly groove, while a maze of Mediterranean inspired electronics fuel it's unique musical scope. It's tranquil qualities shine during the main break with pixie-like melodies taking centrestage and perfectly seguing into a charming conclusion.

Rounding out the release is ‘Shining Lights’ which finds Paul exploring a more organic narrative. Once again the Mediterranean influences are prevalent here but with an exotic percussive lean and spacious groove this will work equally well in progressive or organic minded sets. A definite sign of the times and trends at the moment which caps off a superb Deepwibe Underground debut for DJ Paul. Don't miss it.
