Deviu – Two Worlds [Clubsonica Records]

Clubsonica Records opens the summer season by welcoming Deviu back to the label for his debut EP. Based in Pasto, the Colombian artist began his journey into electronic music production in 2014 under a variety of alias', before eventually settling on Deviu in 2020. Created as an outlet to explore the realms of deep, progressive and organic house, Deviu soon landed releases on Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, Dopamine White and Purified, where his fresh sound immediately found footing. Having made his Clubsonica debut earlier this year with a remix of 'Zulu' by JFR, Deviu now makes a welcome return to the label with 'Two Worlds', alongside remixes from Da Fresh and Erdi Irmak.

The release begins with the electric vibes of 'Two Worlds'. Energetic and fluid, it carries a sleek yet groovy quality from the outset. Gaining momentum across the first act, the piece moves through a series of catchy key changing arps and cosmic effects, as timely stabs and driving percussive arrangements push energy forward. The emotional narrative expands across the second of two breaks, with gentle overlays creating a sense of calm and perfectly setting up an emotive, arp-driven finale. Meanwhile, the second selection 'Through the Darkness' finds Deviu showcasing a deeper side of his repertoire. Remarkably poignant, its warm shapely groove commands attention, moving through rolling contours and rhythmic pulses, while tasteful piano stabs and trance inducing melodies pave the forward. Short and concise, glowing atmospheres rise across the main break, highlighting the piano motif, before smoothly segueing into a goosebump-inducing conclusion. The third and final original 'Beyond the Light' follows a similar sonic ethos and finds the Colombian artist letting plucky hooks and glowing vocal pads descend over warm beats and smooth hypno-rhythms. Metallic melodies percolate across the first movement, bringing with them euphoric vibes, before a break of soulful phrasing and tranquil tones provide a bridge into a joyous finale.

Making his label debut and providing the lone interpretation of 'Two Worlds' is Da Fresh. As a producer and DJ for over two decades the French artist has compiled an impressive resume. Releases for 1605, Suara and Toolroom sit prominently in his discography, while more recent outings for Freegrant Music, Movement Recordings and Perspectives Digital have continued his evolution within the world of melodic house and techno. Now continuing what has been a great start to 2022, Da Fresh adds Clubsonica to his resume with a heady rendition of 'Two Worlds'. From a deeper vision, the French artist draws on the sensibilities of the original, working fragmented arps over a bed of pulsating beats and sleek percussion. Tastefully restrained, the main break advances the narrative with warm bass swells and balmy atmospheres eventually giving way to symphonic motifs and a smooth, meditative finale.

The release concludes with Erdi Irmak returning to the label and providing the lone interpretation of 'Through the Darkness'. The Turkish artist would have to be considered a veteran of the scene at this point, with over two hundred discography credits across his eleven-year career. The emergence of organic house in 2018 proved to be an impactful time in Erdi's evolution as a producer, inspiring him to champion the sound in his own creations, and eventually landing releases via Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music, Hoomidaas and Tale and Tone. No stranger to Clubsonica, Erdi delivered three remixes across a busy 2017 and now makes a welcome return with a gorgeous take on 'Through the Darkness'. Taking inspiration from the original, the Turkish artist flexes his free-thinking muscles and crafts a version that moves further into deeper territory. Warm, groovy and undeniably organic; its chunky low end, pixie-like effects and exotic percussive arrangements work in perfect sonic unison. An expansive centrepiece sits at the heart of the journey, highlighted by transcendent chirps, heavenly vocals and glowing overlays, perfectly setting the stage for a serene finale. A stunning remix from Erdi Irmak, a rare talent who continues to impress, capping off a superb debut EP for Deviu. Highly recommended.
