Der Effekt – Muted [Movement Recordings]

Tash’s Movement Recordings caps off the summer season by welcoming Der Effekt back to the label for a new EP. Hailing from Austria, Marcel Fenkart and Marco Glabonjat make up the Der Effekt production team and have amassed an impressive discography since first emerging in 2008. Top tier imprints such as Beat Boutique, Beatfreak, Freegrant, FSOE, ICONYC and UV have played host to the duo's dance floor minded creations. Also finding a home on Movement Recordings, the duo featured prominently on the second edition of the label's popular 'Prognoesis, Vol. 02' collection, a release which would lead to their first artist EP ‘Inception’, which landed in 2022. 2023 saw the duo continue their creative partnership with Movement, recording their first remix for the label alongside Swiss artist Avior. Now, fresh off their latest Sunexplosion vehicle ‘Aria | Spectrum’, Der Effekt makes a welcome return to Movement for their second artist EP ‘Muted’.

Beginning with the dark, engaging sounds of the title selection, the duo aims squarely for the dancefloor. A smooth DJ friendly intro sets the pace for sweeping atmospherics, delicate arps and a bevy of cosmic creativities to steal the air. A foundation of tough kick drums and driving basslines carve out an energetic path into the break, bringing with them a sense of hopeful anticipation. Clocking in at well over a minute in length, the interlude reveals a thought-provoking vocal, while the trance-inducing arp percolates with each successive pass, onwards to a tasteful build and thunderous finale.

Beneath the prophetic qualities of 'Muted' lies the equally intriguing vibes of 'No More'. Der Effekt crafts a mature, no frills arrangement here, with obsessive rhythms and astral artifacts blanketing energetic beats and hip-swinging grooves. Offering a strong emotional presence, the break melts down to an alluring glow of pads and arps, tastefully building towards a club-effective final act.

Rounding out the release are the astral qualities of 'Deeper', a track where the Austrian duo maintains their dancefloor minded sensibility. A dark groovy aesthetic is quickly revealed, one that balances a loud-soft dynamic perfectly, as holographic synths and cross-cultural vocals flash through a backdrop of reverent textures, before metallic melodies converge for a highly explosive conclusion to round out the EP on an epic note.
