Citizen Kain – Get Some EP [Beatfreak Recordings]

D-Formation’s Beatfreak Recordings closes out the year’s third quarter with an excellent EP from Citizen Kain. The French artist is perhaps best known for his releases on Noir, Stil Vor Talent and Suara. His crunchy, cross pollinated sound continues to be a favourite across a broad spectrum of top DJs from Richie Hawtin and Dubfire to Maceo Plex and Agoria. Now making his much anticipated Beatfreak debut, Citizen Kain presents his ‘Get Some’ EP alongside remixes from D-Formation and Haze-M.

Beginning with the title track you get an immediate feel for Citizen Kain’s unique hybrid of progressive house and techno. Punchy and deliberate at moments, yet free and flowing at others, it’s a unique contrast and one which tasteful melodies add a perfect balance too. A meditative break gets broken up by flurries of drums and timely modulation, perfectly shifting energy into a classy drop and melodious finale. The companion piece ‘Bareknuckle’ proves to be a worthy complement with its darker undertone and wonky lead themes. Undeniably modern, it’s a chunky, funk fuelled journey into esoteric design and pulsating rhythms. Definitely one for the darker dance floors out there and with all the tension and drama you could ever want.

The lone interpretation of ‘Get Some’ is provided by Beatfreak label boss D-Formation. The Spanish artist has been a beloved figure in the electronic underground for over two decades. Appearances on Suara, Einmusika and his own Beatfreak Recordings imprint have highlighted his discography, as he continues to travel the globe delighting fans with his groovy, forward thinking take on progressive house. Always a creative remixer, D-Formation adds a symphonic feel to 'Get Some' with airy motifs and delicate arps. His years behind the decks have given him a keen sense of dance floor dynamics, as evidenced by a perfectly executed break. The energy which accumulates here is monumental and once the beats drop expect your entire dance floor to be marching in unison.

The release concludes with Haze-M providing the lone interpretation of ‘Bareknuckle’. The Tunisian artist has been leading the wave of nu-progressive producers this past year and has been dominating the Beatport charts in the process. His ideas are fresh, bold and exciting, all traits which he has brought to his ‘Barenuckle’ interpretation. Opting for a smoother, more fluid feel, Haze-M has created a gorgeous symphonic motif which not only puts you in a state of hypnotic bliss but perfectly sets up a wonderful cross-cultural break. The laid back drop is a lovely touch as well, nothing big or overblown, just a smooth shift in energy which a clued up crowd is sure to appreciate. An awesome remix from Haze-M which rounds out another exceptional release from D-Formation’s Beatfreak Recordings. Highly Recommended.
