BERDU – Un Viaje a Haedo [Onestar Records]

Onestar Records opens the spring season by welcoming BERDU to the label for his debut EP. Hailing from Colombia but now calling Argentina home, BERDU made his mark on the progressive scene in 2023 on the strength of releases via 3rd Avenue, Droid9 South America, Oz Land Music and South America Avenue. Noted for his melodic and sometimes deeper take on the genre, the Barranquilla native continued to develop his sound across the first quarter of 2024, adding Balkan Connection and Eternal Beats to his discography. Now, as the summer season approaches, BERDU continues to diversify his portfolio with his Onestar debut 'Un Viaje a Haedo'.

Beginning with the title selection 'Un Viaje a Haedo' BERDU finds a perfect balance between groove and melody. Full of rejuvenating energies, the Buenos Aires resident expertly blends robust kick drums and rolling grooves with flashing percussion and catchy progressive hooks. Orbiting effects and glowing pads steal the air leading into the break, casting a hopeful monochrome over the journey, before a rush of white noise cues a classy drop and grooved out finale.

Selection two ‘Manipulate’ only furthers BERDU’s mesmerizing sound but with a greater emphasis on the peak of a set. Strong kick drums and a backdrop of sweeping textural bliss provide the anchor for crunchy rhythms and creamy melodies to create a progressive mood. Cruising effortlessly across the first movement, there's a strong sense of flow as melodies evolve and open, stealing the air, while not only adding emotive qualities, but a tactful rise leading into a calming break. Hazy harmonics and further melodic manipulation continue to elevate mood as the centrepiece takes shape, as chanting vocals emerge to provide a transition into a strong drop and rush of main room alchemy.

Rounding out the release are the smooth hypnotic qualities of 'Lost in BAQ'. Warm, compact and bursting with glowing energies, the track's first movement is built around a chunky groove, spacey effects and fuzzed out chord stabs, the latter of which carry a hip-swinging energy into the main break. BERDU's creative attitude shines across the interlude, with gentle melodies and sweeping sonics cleverly coaxing, eventually revealing a calming monochrome and robotized vocal narrative, one which pushes onwards to a finale that is equal parts uplifting and cosmic, to round out the release on an astral note.
