Christopher Hermann – Scarab [Stellar Fountain]

Stellar Fountain returns this week with a brand new release from Christopher Hermann. The Hungarian artist is fresh off an EP for Balkan Connection’s BC2 division and also owns releases on A Must Have and Just Movement. Now returning to Stellar Fountain for his second appearance, Christopher presents his ‘Scarab’ EP alongside remixes from Gaston Ponte and Monojoke.

Beginning with ‘Scarab’ Christopher explores deep, atmospheric grooves that are perfectly in keeping with the Stellar Fountain ethos. The framework is quite roomy, with a cavernous groove setting the perfect foundation while a stream of gaseous effects tantalizes the senses. A pair of acid-like hooks add wonderfully to it’s overall rhythmic flow and also keep a great sense of groove during a moderately tripped out and undeniably hypnotic break. The companion piece ‘Ankhesenamun’ follows suit with similar design and tempo, thus complementing the lead perfectly. Again it’s the smooth, spacey, hypnotic qualities which really suck you in and the groove not only has some amazing weight to it but ends up being quite entrancing.

The two remixes of ‘Scarab’ opt for a slightly more progressive minded approach with Gaston Ponte being first. Hailing from Buenos Aires, the Argentinean artist ups the tempo but manages to keep the low slung feel of the original quite well. Brighter, vibrant and with a touch more pop, the percussive elements have some dynamic qualities. The emotion achieved during the break is quite lovely, building ever so subtly and perfectly setting up a stunning drop.

The second and final interpretation of ‘Scarab’ is provided by progressive house veteran Monojoke. The Polish artist has been a bit quieter than usual this year making his new material all the more anticipated. His ‘Scarab’ remix does not disappoint and the elements from the original do seem perfect for his effervescent sound. A lot of the trademarks are there, from fuzzy percussive waves to a chunky low end. Monojoke has always been a master at crafting these dramatic, far reaching breakdowns which stretch the cosmic boundaries, and he’s done so again, making for a riveting centrepiece and ultimately setting up a massive finale. A great remix from Monojoke which rounds out a top summer offering from Stellar Fountain.
