Magician On Duty returns with a fresh collaboration from Lucefora and Boggan. Hailing from Boulogne and Ushuaia respectively, the Argentinean duo have worked together in the past with a contribution to Sound Avenue's ‘Correlation’ collection. Now making their Magician On Duty debut, Lucefora and Boggan present their ‘Palana’ EP alongside remixes from Borzoo and Jose Vizcaino.

The release of Lucefora’s debut album ‘Inocencia’ has proved to be a highlight this year. Coming out through the excellent ICONYC imprint in February it was a transcendent blend of progressive and deep house. His latest in collaboration with Boggan definitely falls into the latter category, beginning with the ‘Day’ mix of ‘Palana’ and it’s funky, undulating underbelly. Incredibly hypnotic at points but then moving into more of a serene, atmospheric headspace, while the main break although not a massive moment in the track perfectly shifts energy into a smooth, stripped down second act to round out the piece. The ‘Night’ Mix ups the tempo slightly while focusing on trippier elements and a fuller percussive complement. Hard to go wrong with either version and perfectly suited to different times in the evening’s entertainment. The companion piece ‘Spiral’ brings the mood back down again with a sleek, mid tempo groove and some gorgeous bass tones. The narrative evolves wonderfully, with poignant musicality across a near two minute break before hazy chord stabs elevate the vibe once more.

There are also two remixes of ‘Spiral’ the first of which comes from Canadian artist Borzoo. The Toronto resident makes great use of the primary themes for a spaced out yet highly emotive take on the track. There’s a deeper emotion locked inside this one, something quiet meditative and calming yet still vibrant and exciting, with the main break really assaulting your pleasure centres. A more modern take on the track perhaps and also my favourite version on the release.

The release concludes with Jose Vizcaino returning for his second appearance. Having delivered his well received ‘The Monsters Are Back’ EP for the label in September of last year Jose has since appeared on Manjumasi and Seven Villas. His groovy take on ‘Spirals’ closes the EP quite strong and might be one of the San Francisco residents best remixes to date. The low end carries a hefty presence, thus making for a very club friendly framework but it doesn’t achieve this at the expense of the warm, drifting ambience which was such a strong theme in the original. Great remix from Jose and a very well rounded release from Magician On Duty once again. Highly Recommended.
