MXV – Secrets [ICONYC]

John Johnson's ICONYC returns for their first release of 2021, welcoming MXV back to the label for his first EP. Hailing from London, the UK artist first appeared in November of 2018 with a release on Gabriel Ananda’s Soulful Techno Records. The next two years saw further successes with quality outings for Balkan Connection, Droid9, Eat My Hat, Mango Alley, MNL and Soundteller Records. Now continuing to build momentum as 2021 begins, MXV presents his first original project for ICONYC entitled 'Secrets'.

Beginning with the title selection MXV delves further into the astral techno sound for which he is beloved. Tight, punchy kicks and smooth, contoured bass power the foundation, while tasteful effects and detailed percussion encase the framework. Moving towards the main break, glowing melodies play off warm chord changes, perfectly setting up an emotive centrepiece and smooth finale.

‘Okiniiri’ follows with a further lean towards melodic techno territory. Light and airy in all the right ways, fluttery arps and a bell-like lead descend over a buoyant foundation. Expanding across a one-minute centrepiece, timely modulation builds a shade of anticipation, as a smooth bridge transitions the piece into a warm, musical third act.

Rounding out the release is ‘January’ which finds MXV exploring a deeper more organic blueprint. Strong, soulful musicality highlights this early morning gem, with a bed of layered beats and heartfelt raindrops carrying what is an impassioned five minute journey. For an artist who has been primarily known for peak time club music, this is a pleasant surprise and makes for a fitting end to a classy three track showcase. Highly recommended.
