Tone Depth & Ampish – Palmyra [Slideways]

Tim Penner's Slideways Music returns for what would have to be considered the labels most sought after release to date. Occasional studio partners Tone Depth and Ampish hail from Canada and Egypt respectively. The former an electronic music icon of sorts, with releases on Bedrock Records and YoshiToshi dating back to the early 2000's. Now reborn, Tone Depth has reshaped his sound and has become integral part of the fryhide roster. Ampish meanwhile, has been a prominent figure in the progressive house underground since creating the alias in 2016. Having previously collaborated for flora, Jee Productions and Movement Recordings, Tone Depth and Ampish make their much anticipated Slideways debut with 'Palmyra'.

The title track 'Palmyra' begins deep, laid back and a touch darker in tone. The narrative shifts with the introduction of a gorgeous guitar riff, coming to full fruition following a haze of percussive and ultimately melting down into a soulful break. There's a deeper emotion emanating from this one and the sense of restraint and production detail is what makes that feeling all the more powerful.

The EP concludes with 'Corinth' which ups the tempo and shifts the focus to something more techno inspired. Punchy beats and ominous arps set the tone at the outset before timely transitions introduce new percussive elements to great effect. An expansive break adds mightily to the atmospheric charm of the track and shifts energy wonderfully into a rugged third act finale. Definitely one for a clued up dance floor and a perfect contrast to the emotive lead piece. A perfect way to round out one of the best Slideways releases to date. Highly Recommended.
