Since first appearing in 2019 with an EP via Transensations, Brazilian artist Tonaco has enjoyed a steady rise within the global progressive house scene. Noted for his blend of powerful grooves, hypnotic rhythms and evocative melodies, the Tocantins resident has excelled at creating his own brand of progressive house, making him one of the most promising artists to emerge from Brazil across the last half decade. Juicebox Music, Mango Alley, Meanwhile, Vapour Recordings and WARPP have been vehicles for his creative swell in recent years, in turn earning support from progressive house tastemakers Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren. With 2024 being highlighted by a thunderous remix of 'Cressida' by Chaum and Hobin Rude for Juicebox Music, a track which peaked at #2 in Beatport's Progressive House chart, Tonaco begins 2025 on an impressive note, making his Lumm Records debut with 'Extrema'. Beginning with ‘Extrema’, Tonaco showcases a peak time approach which sets the tone for the EP. Full of dark textures and cutting edge design qualities, the Brazilian phenom expertly blends punchy kick drums and tough shapely grooves, with deconstructed vocal samples, wavy arps and buzzing synth mutations, for an energetic path into the break. Further revealing his creative attitude across the interlude, it's a growling acid line which emerges to steal the air in tension filled pyrotechnic fashion. A brave and unconventional approach, something you don't hear much in progressive house these days, but it shifts the mood momentarily in all its squelchy glory, before a well-timed drop seals a smooth yet exhilarating finale. The companion piece 'Gautama' sits as a worthy complement to its predecessor and opts for a sleeker more hypnotic approach. The track's first movement is built around chunky grooves, billowing stabs and a trippy vocal loop which sits gently below the surface. Its rhythmic and percussive appeal is high, in a dark room New York kind of way, add to that a topline of transcendent pads and textural drifts which highlights the break, and you've got a late night floor burner of the highest order. A fitting way to cap off the EP, and one which furthers Tonaco's path into the upper echelon of progressive house. Highly recommended.
