The Canadian duo got 2018 off to a great start with the release of their ‘Ethereal’ EP in February. The critically acclaimed offering showcased the duos ever evolving style with two cuts of modern melodic techno. Well known in their home city of Toronto, SpeakOf & Santini have also achieved remarkable success as DJs, opening for Maceo Plex in February at the city’s premiere venue Coda. Now returning to their comfortable home of False Face the duo present their latest EP entitled ‘Villain’ alongside a remix from Adam Nathan. Long praised for their diversity, SpeakOf & Santini explore deeper territory here, beginning with the title cut ‘Villain’. Undeniably warm, it’s perfectly contoured groove is nicely dialled for the dance floor. It’s mesmerizing cadence evolves beautifully as vibrant chord stabs fill in the framework. A short but timely break resets the energy, shifting the narrative into a purring meditative resonance, before picking back up for a stellar finale. The companion piece ‘Rebirth’ sits as an ideal complement with its housey flair and buoyant energy. Although somewhat indistinct, vocals play a large role in the narrative, adding an ethereal quality to the mix, perfectly setting up a soaring third act. The lone interpretation of ‘Villain’ is provided by Adam Nathan who is making his first appearance on the label. The London born, Toronto based artist made his debut in February of this year with ‘Soul Machine’. Coming courtesy of the long standing Viva Recordings imprint, the three track offering was not only well received amongst A-list DJs but also enjoyed an extended stay in Beatport’s Deep House chart. Adam has also found a place in Toronto’s burgeoning nightlife with recent gigs at two of cities most highly regarded venues in Coda and One Loft. Now rounding the release out in style, he makes his False Face debut with a stellar rendition of 'Villain'. Wonderfully airy, the warm organic groove and ghostly vocal stabs quickly grab a hold of you. However it's the chopped up main theme which works so wonderfully here. Playing off the rhythmic cadence perfectly, it acts as a vibrant guide to the main break, where it ultimately comes to full fruition, before melting down into a trail of sonic artefacts, setting up a classy drop. A stunning remix from Adam and one can only hope that more new music from the Canadian artist is right around the corner.
