After a four month hiatus Montreal’s Strange Town Recordings returns with a brand new single from SpeakOf & Santini. In addition to having their music supported by Kolsch, Nicole Moudaber, Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo and Blond:ish the Canadian duo and False Face Music label bosses are also well known DJs in their home city of Toronto having opened for Maceo Plex earlier this year and a variety of other international figures. Their debut for Strange Town has been much anticipated and comes alongside remixes from Jaap Ligthart and Navar.

SpeakOf and Santini have an uncanny knack of creating music that sits comfortably in a broad range of DJ sets. It’s melodic and groovy enough to be played by some of the more clued up progressive house DJs like Guy J but it also fits incredibly well into the sets of deep and melodic house DJs like Adriatique. ‘Melodrama’ is a great example of that with it’s bubbly, well sculpted groove and delicate yet poignant themes. Completely timeless across it’s near nine minute journey it’s an elegantly produced gem that sits as one of the duos all time best.

First up on the remixes is Jaap Ligthart who returns to the label for his second appearance. The Dutch artist first appeared on the Canadian imprint in March of last year with a remix of ‘Better Tomorrow’ by Flowers & Sea Creatures and David Granha. Now following a remix for Julian Rodriguez’s Massive Harmony Records Jaap takes ‘Melodrama’ in a deeper, more laid back direction. The main themes while prevalent are less distinct and although probably not as floor friendly as the original do come off more reflective and thus emotive. Definitely one for the more progressive minded DJs out there and just as timeless sounding as the original.

The release concludes with Navar making his label debut following releases on Lost & Found, Sudbeat and Replug. As one of the progressive scenes most unique talents the Dutch artist has become a favourite of Guy J, having been remixed by him twice and appearing at several Lost & Found events. Now bringing his talents to Canada’s Strange Town Navar provides a pure progressive interpretation of ‘Melodrama’. If there is a Lost & Found sound this a perfect example of it; rhythmic and bouncy with an effortless flow, ultimately leading to a reservoir of emotion. Navar is a rare talent and it’s certainly captured across this near eleven minute journey. A lovely way to round out Strange Town’s first release of 2018. Highly Recommended.
