Mental Order & Tim Othy – Energy | Induction [Clubsonica Records]

Clubsonica Records welcomes Mental Order and Tim Othy back to the label for their debut EP entitled Energy | Induction'. Hailing from Bogota and Cucuta respectively, the Colombian duo have been frequent studio partners since their first joint production in July of 2019. Their creative synergy has led to releases on Balkan Connection, Beatfreak Limited and Strangers Beats, along with support from progressive music's key tastemakers. Having made their Clubsonica debut with a contribution to the label's 2020 ADE Sampler', Mental Order and Tim Othy now return to the label for their first EP alongside remixes from Carsten Halm and Mauro Aguirre.

Beginning with Energy' the duo explores the deeper spectrum of progressive minded house. Its warm, full bodied groove is perfectly sculpted, flowing through emotive chord changes while finely tuned percussion and whimsical arps add a buoyant flair. Indistinct vocals, sweeping effects and wonky chord stabs expand the narrative across the first act, perfectly setting the stage for an expansive break. Vibrant rhythms elevate mood as the interlude commences, eventually melting down to a reservoir of astral sonics, before a timely build cues a funky finale. The companion piece Induction' continues the warm, inviting ethos of the release with a robust groove, lively arps and waves of perfectly manicured percussion. Mysterious yet musical, its timely shades and tones create stirring moments, before giving way to rousing effects and clustered melodies leading into the break. Impactful once again, the centrepiece is a story within the story, spine tingling and tense in equal measure, building subtly as harmonic waves and a tight drum roll converge for an exhilarating apex and groovy drop.

Making his label debut and providing the first interpretation of Energy' is Carsten Halm. Based in Cologne, the German artist has been a DJ for well over a decade, playing some of his country's trendiest clubs along with his self organized events. As a producer Carsten has made considerable strides since first appearing in 2016. Solee's Parquet Recordings has been a comfortable home for the Cologne resident, with three releases landing in 2020 that earned play and support from Animal Trainer, Artbat, Eelke Kleijn, Format-B and Solomun. Now following 2021 offerings via Traum and UV, Carsten makes his much anticipated Clubsonica debut with a powerful rendition of Energy'. Warm and driving, the groove commands a large presence as vocal fragments and astral effects adorn the framework. Evolving with a veteran's savvy, timely drops and tasteful modulation provide a rising wave of tension, as piercing stabs continue to push momentum forward. Concise and haunting, the main break continues to elevate mood as impassioned arps marry haunting atmospheres and ghostly wails, all perfectly intertwined and setting the stage for a euphoric finale.

The second and final interpretation of Energy' is provided by Mauro Aguirre who returns to the label for his fourth appearance. As a fixture of Colombia's nightlife for the better part of three decades, the Cali resident has performed at the city's premiere venues while also landing radio shows on La Super Estacion 100.5 and La X 96.5 FM. As a producer Mauro has been a frequent collaborator alongside fellow countryman and progressive music star Kamilo Sanclemente. The duo's creative synergy has seen them land releases on Nick Warren's Hope Recordings, Guy Mantzur's Plattenbank Records and Antrim's Or Two Strangers. Continuing to forge a path for his solo productions, Mauro now returns to Clubsonica with an inspired interpretation of Energy'. Taking a cue from the original while adding a progressive state of mind, the Colombian artist carves out a fluid groove adorned with firing percussion, pulsating lines and fresh harmonic phrases. Emerging pads provide a unique emotional response leading into the break, eventually melting down to a quiet calm as a striking vocal summons the beats onwards to a cosmic finale. A stunning interpretation from Mauro, capping off another exceptional summer offering from Clubsonica Records.
