Eli Spiral – Whirling Nights / Dragonfly [Stellar Fountain]

Eli Spiral makes his Stellar Fountain debut this week with 'Whirling Delights' alongside remixes from Diogo Ribeiro and Audioglider. Based in Boulder, Colorado, Eli began his career in August of last year with an EP courtesy of Majestic Family Records. Having since appeared on Balkan Connection South America and Soundteller Records, the US artist has established himself as a name to watch in the progressive underground.

'Whirling Delights' leads the release off with a deep, rolling groove and a wealth of dazzling effects. Although sparse, ghostly overlays add a lovely atmospheric touch leading into the break. Eventually building to a boil, the electronics sizzle as percussive lines add further tension before layers of drums initiate a massive drop. The companion piece 'Dragonfly' comes with similar design qualities over a more stripped groove. More melodic as the storyboard unfolds, the quirky synth hooks still retain the ethos of its predecessor. An acidic break shifts the narrative with twinkly motifs gleaming above in lovely contrast.

The first interpretation of 'Whirling Delights' is provided by Diogo Ribeiro who is making his label debut. The Portuguese artist opts for a more refined, dubby route which complements the original perfectly. The drums have a cool shuffle which contributes nicely to the rhythmic core as bands of effects and catchy hooks converge around the framework. A smooth arp appears, initiating the main break before raspy synths and spacey electronics lead to an amazing finale.

The second and final interpretation of 'Whirling Delights' is provided by Stellar Fountain label artist Audioglider. Hailing from the UK and boasting releases on ICONYC and Sudbeat, Audioglider has become a firm favourite in the progressive underground. Clocking in at ten minutes there is a lot to like about his 'Whirling Delights' interpretation. While the original has somewhat of a choppy feel, Audioglider smoothes out the proceedings for a sleeker, poignant journey. The low end rumbles with rugged character while an array of spacey effects meld with the quirky hooks from the original. By the six minute mark things go celestial with glowing overlays and charming melodies elevating the mood tenfold. What an awesome remix which caps off another excellent release on Stellar Fountain.
