Deeparture – Black Box [ICONYC]

The latest from John Johnson’s ICONYC imprint welcomes Deeparture to the label for his debut EP. Hailing from the Netherlands Dominique Vijverberg aka Deeparture has been one of his country's most promising progressive house talents. With a discography which already includes releases on Cinematique, Soulful Techno, One of a Kind and Strange Town Recordings, Deeparture now makes his ICONYC debut with ‘Black Box’.

Spread across three tracks it’s the breathtaking ‘Tail Strike’ which gets the EP underway. Like most of Deeparture’s productions it’s incredibly musical with a variety of layers to get lost in. From metallic arps to free flowing melodies and clustered claps the first act is both emotive and dynamic, perfectly setting up a poignant break, complete with a classy and very well executed build into a third act of thumping proportions.

The title selection ‘Black Box’ brings the tempo up a touch but overall it’s more of a delicate sounding production. It begins with these marvellously sculpted beats and warm bass swells, before evolving into another gorgeous musical journey. The moment after the break is perhaps the most impactful, as dulcet hooks pierce the air, resulting in joyous moments with just the right amount of restraint.

The release concludes with ‘Crosswind’ which is the most playful and overtly melodic of the three. Although it comes across quite deep the musical narrative is such that track is incredibly grandiose and unabashedly epic at points. None more so than the main break with its airy symphonics and poignant piano’s. A gorgeous creation from Deeparture which rounds out a hugely successful debut on John Johnson’s ICONYC. Highly Recommended.
