Based in Bogota, the Colombian artist first appeared on the progressive music underground in 2012. His melodic sound has found favour with the genre's key tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren, while landing him releases on Balkan Connection, Bonzai Records and Electronic Elements. Now releasing his first original music in over four years, David debuts on Onestar with 'Más Allá / Dulzaina'. Spread across two tracks it’s the deep, enchanting vibes of ‘Más Allá’ which get the the EP underway. It’s warm, well contoured foundation is made up of meaty kicks and a voluptuous groove, while airy atmospherics, indistinct melodies and effervescent percussion heighten the senses above. Haunting sweeps and hazy harmonics segue nicely into a short break where and elegant apex pushes the heavenly mood into a gorgeous final act. The release concludes with ‘Dulzaina’ which furthers the deep, ethereal mood of the EP. Anchored by a warm and spacious groove, it’s sparkling arps and exotic percussion resonate beautifully against a backdrop of emotive chord changes and incandescent tones. Additional effects and a wave of soulful harmonics shifts the mood further into emotive territory across the break, building nicely to a tasteful crescendo and perfectly setting up a stripped back drop and pulsating finale. Heady sounds from David which may remind many of James Holden's revolutionary sound from the mid 2000s. It rounds out a fresh EP from David Duque, who makes a excellent Onestar Records debut, while continuing to stake his claim as a rising talent in the progressive underground. Highly recommended.
