Cream (PL) – Prisma / Reto / Lumiere [Juicebox Music]

Praveen Achary's Juicebox Music opens the month of November by welcoming Cream to the label for his debut EP. Whether operating solo or as part of the famed Cream and Deep Fog duo, Polish artist Cream has firmly etched his place in the history of progressive music. With a discography that dates back almost a decade, the Jarosław resident has showcased his music via Beatfreak, Ein, Proton Music and Strange Town, while earning continued support from genre tastemaker Hernan Cattaneo. 2023 has seen Cream operate at his most creative and prolific to date, making impressive debuts on Einmusika and Get Physical, while returning to familiar landing spots such as Canada's Strange Town. Continuing to bolster his resume as the year winds to a close, Cream now adds Juicebox Music to his discography with a three-track artist showcase entitled 'Prisma / Reto / Lumiere'.

The first selection 'Prisma' finds Cream crafting a nostalgic progressive house epic, one which spans close to eleven minutes in length and begins with a hefty two-minute intro. What was once a staple style of the genre has definitely gone the wayside of shorter, less musical and more groove based tracks, so it's nice to see Cream paying homage to progressive music's yester years. Rich in emotion, melody and atmosphere, there are enough heartrending moments and panoramic storytelling to not only appease a morning dancefloor, but a headphone listening session as well.

The EP's midway point is marked with 'Reto', a track which manages to find a great balance between rhythm and melody. Beefy drums and percussive splashes make for a great foundation for warm key changes and fragmented melodies to conjure up bucolic imagery leading into the break. Here, Cream showcases his creative attitude with a long calculated build, as melodies cluster and granular sweeps blur across the stereo field, eventually revealing the emotive groove for a stunning finale.

EP closer 'Lumiere' is an apt barometer of where Cream’s headspace is at, as he continues the rich melodic lean of the release. It's neo-saccharine design and fuzzed out lines are wistful and energy inducing in equal measure, tastefully building to a wide-eyed intensity of effervescent synths and smooth key-changing grooves, a colourful co-ax of sound from the Polish artist, which ultimately rounds out the EP on an epic note. Highly recommended.
