Heerhorst – Timeshift [ICONYC]

Following on from the success of 'Takes all Kinds' by Allies for Everyone, John Johnson's ICONYC welcomes Heerhorst back to the label for a new EP. With five appearances on the American imprint since making his debut in 2019, it's safe to say German artist Heerhorst has found a comfortable home in ICONYC. Following well-received outings via Ballroom Black, Fakktory Records and Jannowitz, Heerhorst now finds his way back to ICONYC with 'Timeshift', alongside a remix from WhoKnew.

Beginning with ‘Alright’ Heerhorst continues to impress with a punchy groove, pulsating rhythms and striking stabs. From its darker beginnings come emotive moments however, as the first break lightens mood with a lovely sequence of processed pianos, before seguing into a first act onslaught deliberate percussion and buzzing effects. The main break re-visits the main theme once again, setting the stage for an array of metallic melodies, which ultimately make for a euphoric finale. The companion piece 'Timeshift' continues to explore astral narratives with fresh design, rippling grooves and cosmic artifacts. Sitting as an ideal complement to its predecessor, a charged first act preludes a dramatic break, where emerging melodies and devilish effects take centerstage, before a rush of noise ushers in a thumping drop and driving finale.

Rounding out the release with the lone interpretation of 'Alright' is WhoKnew which is a new joint project from Andy Godderis of Mononoid fame and ICONYC boss John Johnson. With a wealth of production experience on both sides, Andy and John flex their creative muscles with a contemporary melodic approach to the remix. Taking the musical spirit from the original, the duo revamp the framework with a slightly more minimal and groovier approach, eventually paving the way for a break of elastic-like melodies and drum driven drama. A massive first production from WhoKnew, which caps off a hugely successful ICONYC return for Heerhorst. Highly recommended.
