Rod V – Understated [Soundteller Records]

The latest release from Deersky’s Soundteller Records welcomes Rod V. back to the label for his debut single. Hailing from Guatemala, Rod first appeared on the Polish imprint in October with a contribution to the label’s ‘ADE Sampler’. Also owning releases on A Must Have and Silk Music, Rod now returns to Soundteller with ‘Understated’ alongside remixes from Erdi Irmak and Pranav Mayekar.

Looking back over Rod’s discography you know he’s got an affinity for crafting timeless, feel good melodies. ‘Understated’ certainly follows that ethos and yet is aptly titled as well. Although the melodic concepts are strong and emotive, the delivery is quite classy and yes a touch understated. It’s this approach which ultimately makes the end result all the more powerful, as witnessed by a shimmering, mildly distorted main break and fluid, free flowing finale. A gorgeous creation from Rod.

Over the course of 2018 we’ve seen Deersky diversify the label to a degree, moving into deep, dreamy house on more than a few occasions. So too has Erdi Irmak who suitably provides the first remix here. The Turkish artist is on the cusp of an EP for Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden and continues to ride high with a gorgeous interpretation of ‘Understated’. The tempo comes down for a lazy, laid back excursion into organic house. The drums immediately stand out, quite live and full of wonderful character, while haunting vocal pads, shifty harmonics and buzzing synths deliver emotion and tension at just the right moments. A classy remix from Erdi.

The second and final remix is provided by Pranav Mayekar who returns to the label for his third appearance. The Indian artist made his Soundteller debut in fine fashion with ‘Apollonia’ alongside a heavyweight remixer cast of GMJ and Paul Angelo & Don Argento. Pravav then contributed ‘Elixier’ to the label’s acclaimed ‘Vibrant Vibeland’ series, which ended up getting licensed to Airwave’s ‘In The Mix 007 - Progressive Sessions’, released courtesy of Bonzai Records just a few weeks ago. Now returning to the label for his first remix Pranav takes ‘Understated’ into pure progressive house territory. With a strong emphasis on the melodic elements coupled with a wonderfully contoured groove and celestial vocal refrains it rounds the release out on a feel good note. Much like Rod V, Pranav is an artist to keep a close eye on in 2019, both of whom seem to have found a home on Soundteller Records. Highly recommended.
