rAin – Dreamy Shadow EP [Soundteller Records]

The latest release from Deersky’s Soundteller Records welcomes rAin back to the label for a new EP entitled ‘Dreamy Shadow’. A well known DJ in his home country of Mauritius, the Port-Louis resident has shared the decks with Hernan Cattaneo, Guy J, Patrice Baumel, Eelke Kleijn and a long list of international talents. Having first appeared on Soundteller in March of 2018 with the 'Sweet Collision' EP, rAin also lays claim to releases on Droid9, Juicebox Music, Manual Music and Massive Harmony Records. Now after a stunning remix of Bynomic's 'Forbidden Fruits', rAin returns to Soundteller with a three track showcase.

Beginning with ‘Professor’ rAin crafts a deeper, organic piece with a gorgeous emotive storyboard. Played out over nine minutes, it's clattering drums, wistful harmonics and impassioned swells work beautifully together. A slow methodical build is likely it's strongest suit, subtly adding tasteful arps and sweeping atmospheres as the first act evolves, before a short but well timed break adds tension and anticipation for a poignant final movement.

The second and also title selection follows suit with similar sonic attributes. Once again it's a full, key changing low end which anchors the journey. A touch more open than it's predecessor, a catchy arp flows through a framework of bouncy drums as the piece builds. Rising into the main break, the primary arp then drops out in favour of the drum tracks, cleverly building towards a gentle crescendo and purring finale.

The release concludes with more of a traditional progressive minded creation entitled 'Forever'. Although the tempo sits just below 120, it's tougher beats and full, rolling groove command a larger presence than the previous two selections. Energetic, detailed and undeniably beautiful, it’s a powerful journey highlighted by kaleidoscopic arps and ghostly vocal fragments. Plush chord stabs add further depth leading the break, as glistening motifs and glowing atmospheres transfer energy into a free flowing final movement. It rounds out a welcome return to Soundteller for rAin, who continues to evolve as an artist as 2020 unfolds. Highly recommended.
