Manual Music showcases new interpretations of Paul Hazendonk’s critically acclaimed ‘Signature’ series. Released over the course of the last calendar year said series found the Dutch artist and Manual boss presenting six new originals across three EPs. Paul now personally selects some of his favourite artists to reinterpret the tracks beginning with Arina Mur, fran&co and Kamilo Sanclemente.

The unique thing about both Paul and Manual Music is their bordlerless ethos. Never locked within the confines of one particular genre or sound, Paul’s DJ sets and production output along with the labels releases have always been quite diverse. That sentiment holds true across the three remixes, beginning with Russian artist Arina Mur who provides an inspired take on ‘X Is Forever’. Known for her deep, musical creations the Ekaterinburg resident remoulds the original elements into a haunting slice of melodic house. The vocal elements work wonders here, utilized perfectly for maximum emotional response, while a perfectly contoured groove and rolling rhythmic core resonate on a warm, inviting frequency.

Next up is fran&co who makes his Manual Music debut following a string of well received releases on his Mad Hatter imprint. The Italian born, Germany based artist has carved out a unique place in the world of melodic techno, one where his primary focus is on groove and emotion. ‘Symphony From Outer Space’ has always been a favourite of mine so it’s great to see him land on Manual with an equally impressive take on ‘Unagi’. Taking a cue from the original, the Frankfurt resident creates drama and tension with a robust yet spacious groove, striking electronics and most of all, those spirited arps, which sit nicely on a bed of granular fuzz during the main break. Destined for dance floor destruction, expect to be hearing this one a lot in the coming months.

The release concludes with one of the label’s brightest progressive house stars Kamilo Sanclemente. The Colombian artist has several appearances on the Dutch imprint as well as it’s more progressive minded affiliate MNL. Now fresh off chart topping remixes for Afterglow, Balkan Connection and Proton Music, Kamilo lands back on Manual with a massive rendition of ‘XOS’. Already performing well with DJs pre-release, the Hernan Cattaneo favourite remodels the original into a peak time slice of pure progressive house. Possessing more of a dramatic undercurrent, it’s bulbous bass tones move through moments of emotional energy, while fiery percussion and freeform sonics create a compelling canopy of sound. Kaleidoscopic motifs continue to advance the narrative, effortlessly transferring energy into a second act which builds tension through fierce modulation, while still maintaining a strong emotional disposition. No doubt headed for prime time play from progressive music’s top guard, it rounds out a diverse and inspired remix edition for Paul Hazendonk’s ‘Signature Series’. Can’t wait to see what Part 2 will bring. Highly recommended.
