Deersky’s Soundteller Records continues to grow by welcoming NotoMash to the label. Tomasz Stroczkowski aka NotoMash hails from Warsaw, Poland and began his production career almost a decade ago. Releases on Asymmetric Recordings, Electronic Tree and System Recordings highlight his discography until 2015 before he went quiet for almost three years. A welcome return this year saw an EP for SpekuLLA Records in July and now NotoMash embarks on perhaps the biggest release of his career with an artist showcase for Soundteller Records.

The four track journey begins with the dark and dramatic ‘Sentinel’ which immediately sets a great tone for the EP. Tight beats, crisp percussion and a series of intertwined synth elements make for an eventful first act. It’s ethereal feel can’t be ignored, furthering the narrative during a tension filled break as flurries of claps and effects get washed away into a deadly drop. The second selection ‘The Tree Of Life’ comes in a bit more progressive minded with a fuller, rolling groove and playful rhythmic qualities. Indistinct vocals and mallet like clusters add great depth before a short break resets the groove with afro drums and breaky percussion. Cross cultural motifs soon follow and you quickly realize how well crafted this is as the narrative continues to evolve with bulbous bass tones shaking the foundation before a buzzing finale. Definitely the stand out track on the EP for me.

At the releases halfway point we see a slightly more techno oriented side of Tomasz’s repatorie. No doubt progressive minded but it’s stripped, deliberate nature makes it ideal crossover material. The lead theme is both hypnotic and hook heavy, burrowing further into your subconscious with each successive loop, before culminating during another expansive interlude. The release concludes with the quirky ‘Firefly’ which adds further depth to the EP. A touch more stripped back, it relies on timely modulation and percussive shifts to make what is a hugely enjoyable eight minute dance floor romp. The three year absence has clearly done wonders for NotoMash as these tracks arrive as a pleasant surprise. There are an abundance of unique ideas throughout this EP and the production is crisp, clean and full of ultrasonic qualities. A great addition to the Soundteller Records roster and progressive music fans should look forward to hearing more fresh productions from this fine talent. Highly recommended.
