Nicholas Van Orton – SK8 [Balkan Connection]

Nicholas Van Orton gets 2020 off to a strong start with a new 3 track EP via Balkan Connection. 2019 proved to be a great year for the Buenos Aires resident, having released several well received projects, most notably collaborations with Hot TuneiK and DJ Paul, along with a massive remix of East Cafe’s ‘Being Kind Is Overrated’ and his 'Kick Flip / Rack Punch' EP to round out the year. Now beginning the new year on his second home of Balkan Connection, the BCSA boss presents his three track 'SK8' EP.

'Heelflip' kicks off the proceedings with a tough and driving progressive mood. Rolling grooves, electronic lines and dark motifs surround the percussive framework, before icy atmospheres and a deadly vocal loop ultimately steals the show. A touch ominous, it’s unique character sounds fresh while a concise break perfectly preludes a storming finale.

The second selection ‘Varial’ is not only nicely titled but continues the theme of the EP perfectly. Its dark, punchy beats and robust groove command a big presence, before sinister stabs, bubbly arps and icy atmospheres take you into hypnotic territory. Two trippy breaks do wonders to advance the narrative, adding just enough tension to make for two solid payoffs and palpable moments of drama.

‘Varialflip’ rounds the release out in fine style with further hypnotic leanings. Built around a tight, chugging foundation, it’s meandering atmospheres and gaseous effects that eventually grab a hold of you. The main break furthers the intrigue through stripped beats and tranquil arps, which not only provide a smooth transition into the final act but take you one step closer to the cosmos. It caps off three fresh and inspired cuts from Nicholas, who has certainly gotten the new year off to a great start. Highly recommended.
