Jean Caillou makes a welcome return to Magician On Duty for his debut EP ‘Essence’. Hailing from Zurich, the Swiss artist fist appeared on the US imprint in January of this year with a contribution to the label’s ‘Two Year Anniversary’ collection. Having also found a home on the fast rising Sag & Tre imprint, Jean now lands back on Magician On Duty with a two track EP alongside remixes from Joe Miller and Nyvs.

Besting yourself with each successive outing is no easy feat but Jean has been doing that since first appearing on the deep house scene in 2016. That sentiment holds true here with ‘Essence’ coming in as perhaps his most emotive creation to date. Groovy, musical and wonderfully dreamy, it’s an exotic journey into the depths of organic house. It’s subtle warmth radiates such positivity and with two tastefully intertwined narratives it’s very easy to lose yourself in it’s free flowing story. The companion piece ‘High On Life’ comes with a similar sonic ethos but with perhaps a lesser lean towards the more overt qualities of it’s predecessor. This is a very thought provoking piece however, from it’s nostalgic chord changes, to jangly hooks and and exotic percussion, you want to delve deeper into it’s soulful charm and that’s always a great thing.

Returning to the label and providing the first remix of ‘Essence’ is Joe Miller. The Australian artist made his Magician On Duty debut in June of this year with a gorgeous interpretation of Marian’s ‘Pantheism’. Now a firmly recognized name in the world of organic house, the Melbourne resident lays claim to releases on All Day I Dream, Dream Culture and Sag & Tre. Always a creative remixer, Joe now lands back on MOD with an inspired take on ‘Essence’. Over a bed of beautifully crafted break beats comes waves of melody and colour. The emotive power of the original resonates on a different plane here, quite profound and healing in a way. I can’t help but think of Northern Exposure One when I hear this and that might be the one of the most highly regarded mix compilations of all time. So if you’re a fan of electronic music that is both timeless and emotive, then there’s no reason this shouldn’t be in your collection.

Rounding out the release and providing the second and final interpretation of ‘Essence’ is Nyvs. Much like Jean, Nyvs made his Magician On Duty debut with a contribution to the label’s ‘Two Year Anniversary’ collection. Now fresh off an appearance on Sol Selectas’ ‘Summer Sol IV’ compilation Nyvs returns to MOD for his first remix. The tempo shifts down a touch here for a loose, playful and wonderfully organic journey. Redolent and groovy, it makes great use of the main themes from the original but in a more indistinct and fragmented way if you will. The end result might be all the more powerful depending on your taste but it certainly resonates very strongly with me. A great remix from Nyvs which caps off another must have release from Magician On Duty. Highly recommended.
