Pangea Recordings rounds out their summer season by welcoming GuyRo to the label for his debut EP. The Irish born, Spain based artist has had a strong year, highlighted by releases on ICONYC Noir, Krafted Underground, Magnitude Recordings and PHW Elements. Known for his borderless approach to production, GuyRo has been flexing the more progressive inspired side of his repertoire this year, and in doing so has been operating at his most prolific. Now following the August release of his Eduardo McGregor & Darksidevinyl remix, GuyRo debuts on Pangea with ‘Ten’ alongside a remix from Nick Muir.

GuyRo’s affinity for combining rhythm and melody has never been more profound than on the title selection ‘Ten’. Anchored by a warm, chunky groove and finely tuned percussion, it’s a production that flows through a myriad of hypnotic motifs. Two wondrous arps take centrestage here, playing off each other wonderfully across the first act, bringing heightened moments, before a buzzing break seals it’s brilliance with a warm build and meditative finale. Meanwhile, the second selection ‘Candor’ has a distinctly retro feel with it’s 80’s style drums and low-end. Carrying a similar disposition to it’s predecessor, a wave of beautifully intertwined motifs lays the foundation for a captivating vocal and luminous chords. Tasteful modulation across the break brings a unique emotional response, while heightening tension just enough to make for a classy drop and heavenly final movement. Rounding out the Originals are the reflective sounds of ‘subOscillate’. Groovy, organic and full of intricate detail, the first act builds with catchy acid lines, vocal overlays and another glorious arp. Electronic yet soulful, the narrative shifts during the main break, with a billowing low end flowing through striking modulation as the lead theme slowly fades back to prominence, ultimately setting up a heartfelt finale. Certainly the most emotive selection of the three and a fitting piece to round them out.

Making his label debut and providing the lone interpretation of ‘Ten’ is Nick Muir. Beloved for being one half of Bedrock during the golden era of progressive house, Nick and John Digweed were responsible for some of the genres most beloved tracks, namely ‘For What You Dream Of’, ‘Heaven Scent’, ‘Voices’ and ‘Emerald’. Fast forward to present day and Nick continues to collaborate with John, working on projects for Watergate, Systematic and of course Bedrock. Now making his Pangea debut, Nick turns in a stunning rendition of ‘Ten’. Keeping the warmth and musicality from the original, Nick manages to add more of techno state of mind with a punchier, deliberate framework and fiery percussion. Vocal overlays and fragmented melodies unite in a perfect sonic marriage as the first act evolves, making for a hugely epic vibe that delivers on a variety of levels. The main break serves as the track’s dramatic core, melting down to a tense trail of rolling drums, before a gentle rush of noise sparks a symphonic finale. A huge interpretation from Nick which rounds out a most memorable Pangea debut for himself and GuyRo. Highly recommended.
