Magnitude Recordings returns after a seven year hiatus with a brand new EP from label boss Francesco Pico. Formed in 2005, the Dutch label gained notoriety quickly, showcasing music from Eelke Kleijn, Ferreck Dawn, Malbetrieb, Alessandro Diga and Harold Heath. Francesco enjoyed similar success, finding a home on Audio Therapy and Global Underground while recording artist album’s for Manual Music and Outside The Box. Now returning as a Manual Music affiliate, Magnitude Recordings looks set to dominate again and with a new EP from Francesco alongside remixes from Kasper Koman and Pole Folder I can’t think of a better way to start.

Beginning with the title track ‘Taming Da Echoes’ it's clear the time away has had a positive effect on Francesco’s sound. There’s a lovely warmth and character to the production while still retaining that uptempo progressive-tech vibe he was so loved for. It begins with a bouncy, perfectly contoured groove and vibrant tech house style percussion. Add to that some strong rhythmic elements, killer synth hooks and spacey effects, and you’ve got something that’s not only highly danceable but mentally stimulating as well. The companion piece ‘Bugs Jump Out Of The Water’ is equally excellent with a funked up foundation and catchy electronics. The main break brings smooth chord changes which up its emotive charm and set the piece in a timeless space just like ‘Taming Da Echoes’. Both strong compositions and no doubt a taste of things to come from Francesco.

The remixer selections are quite excellent and add nicely to what could already be considered a smashing return for Francesco and Magnitude. Kasper Koman has found a great space within the progressive house underground. The Dutch artist has showcased his music on Guy Mantzur’s Plattenbank Records and Paul Hazendonk’s MNL imprint. Now bringing his inimitable style to ‘Taming Da Echoes’ Kasper provides one of his best remixes to date. Bright and melodic but with a deeper, chunky edge it expands on the motifs from the original nicely, putting the piece in more of a pure progressive context. The real magic happens during the break, highly emotive and a touch grandiose it sits as a poignant centerpiece to the floor friendly first and third acts.

The lone interpretation of 'Bugs Jump Out Of The Water' is provided by progressive house savant Pole Folder. The Belgium artist has a long history in the genre highlighted by releases on Bedrock, Sudbeat and Global Underground. Known for his emotive, storytelling style he reworks 'Bugs Jump Out Of The Water' into a smooth, free flowing journey. Irresistibly warm and full of gorgeous tonal themes the first act builds a subtle tension before the main break shifts the journey into more emotive territory. There's generally a reflective tone to the Belgian's work and it's certainly evident here, a wonderful vibe from start to finish and definitely one that could find its way into the sets of Hernan Cattaneo. It caps off a hugely successful return for Magnitude Recordings and let's hope there are many more releases from both the label and Francesco in the near future. Highly Recommended.
