Denny Loco – Live At Pompei [Asymmetric Recordings]

Denny Loco makes a welcome return to Lonya’s Asymmetric Recordings this week with a brand new EP. The Italian artist last appeared on the Israeli imprint in December of last year with a remix of Lonya’s hit single ‘Righteousness’. His latest EP is entitled ‘Live At Pompei’ and comes alongside remixes from Tim Robert and Some Little Things.

Beginning with ‘Bivio 222’ we find Denny exploring the darker realms of progressive techno. Electric in design, the striking rhythms and tough groove immediately grab your attention. Ghostly effects and metallic motifs highlight the framework before breaking down into a buzzing centrepiece which resets the groove for a killer finale. The companion piece ‘Pompei’ is a more melodic construction but the crisp, electric design is still prevalent enough to give it some bite. The groove is classically progressive in many ways but a wealth of shufflely rhythms and tonal designs break it out of those traditional genre confines. The lead theme is mildly oriental in feel which works amazingly well the squelchy synths and a dramatic break just adds further fuel to the fire.

The lone interpretation of ‘Bivio 222’ is provided by Tim Robert who returns to the label following a contribution to the label’s ‘Off Springs #2’ collection from May of 2017. One of the USA’s brightest stars in progressive house, Tim once again delivers with a great rendition of ‘Bivio 222’. While still retaining the techno inspired qualities of the original the US artist has reshaped the framework with more of a progressive sensibility. It’s tough, driving vibe is perfectly geared to peak time with timely effects and chugging rhythms adding their own unique flair. The second act clocks in at just under two minutes and is an exercise in dramatic tension, perfectly carrying the ghostly vibe from the first act and stripping down before a sizzling apex ignites a storming finale. A massive remix from Tim and perhaps his biggest to date in fact.

The release concludes with Some Little Things providing the lone interpretation of ‘Pompei’. The Argentinean duo brings a classic prog house feel to the track with charming motifs and plucky melodies. A smooth yet exhilarating build leads the main break which is short and timely, picking back up with a stripped down portion of the groove while focusing on the musical elements which are the real standout here. A lovely remix from Some Little Things which caps off a very well rounded release for Lonya’s Asymmetric Recordings.
