Tim Penner’s Slideways Music welcomes the hotly tipped duo Day By Day to the label for their debut EP. Based in Montreal, Canada Jesse Zotti & Scott James make up the Day By Day production moniker. They got the project off to a great start in 2017 with releases on Beat Boutique and Plaisirs Sonores Records. Now continuing to build momentum as 2018 begins, Day By Day presents their much anticipated Slideways debut alongside remixes from Rick Pier O’Neil and Tim Penner.

Beginning with the title track ‘Koi Fish’ the duo’s seductive sound get showcased wonderfully. On a warm, fluid underbelly comes gentle arps, elegant motifs and sparse but incredibly charming vocal stabs. Encased in a glowing ambience, it makes for a poignant nine minute journey, likely suited to early or late night play and daydream headphone listening. The companion piece ‘Babylon’ comes with the same radiant qualities of its predecessor. A touch deeper perhaps but with a more distinctive and impressively sculpted groove. Again a subtle but highly emotive vocal stab gets utilized while the atmospheric glow seeming grows with each passing loop. There’s something incredibly enticing about both these compositions, the creamy design qualities are irresistible and no doubt set the stage for bigger things to come from this talented duo.

The lone interpretation of ‘Koi Fish’ is provided by Rick Pier O’Neil who returns to the label following strong releases on Clubsonica Records and Suffused Music. The French artist enjoyed a career resurgence in 2015 and hasn’t looked back, racking up more than 100 discography credit’s in three year. Known for his darker progressive sound, Rick’s remix will be a slight detour for his diehard fans. The warm ambience of the original has been maintained nicely, with a more club friendly framework put in place at the foundation. Not without electric moments, the main break does deliver some drama, as a gritty wall of sonic decay provides an energy bridge into an emotive third act finale.

The lone interpretation of ‘Babylon’ is provided by Slideways label boss Tim Penner. The Canadian artist closed out 2017 on a high note with his ‘The Gatekeeper’ EP for John OO Fleming’s JOOF Aura imprint dominating the Beatport progressive house and techno charts. A four month break has made his remix all the more anticipated and it closes the release out with all the fire we’ve come to expect from one of Canada’s premier progressive house artists. The tempo comes up quite a bit and so too does the energy, as electric swells intertwine with the chugging groove. The main break steals the show though, with cascading motifs and meditative pulses slowly melting down into a flurry of claps as the rousing groove drops for a magic moment. A killer remix from Tim which sets a high standard for the rest of 2018.

Planned and executed to perfection, this is a release with balance, from the more laid back originals to the remixes which come with a bit more of a dance floor presence. Highly Recommended.
