Chris Cargo – Jack In The Box [Flow Vinyl]

Chris Cargo debuts on DJ Pena’s Flow Vinyl this week with a brand new EP. The Portuguese imprint seems like the ideal landing spot for the Irish artist having recently appeared on Guy Mantzur’s Plattenbank Records, ICONYC, Soundteller Records and his own It You Wait imprint. It’s been great to watch Chris’ remarkable resurgence over the last year and that narrative continues to build with his latest entitled ‘Jack In The Box’.

The title and showcase piece leads the release off with a deeper, hypnotic vibe which Chris has been exploring of late. Haunting from the outset, it’s punchy beats and rippling low end are quickly engulfed by ominous atmospheres and a meditative arp, the latter of which proves to be quite compelling. Flowing through modular shifts it allows the storyboard to build tension in waves, with timely drops and percussive flurries adding dramatic moments along the way. A heady production that will not only work wonders on the dance floor but is a also an amazing listen as well.

The companion piece ‘Rudder’ picks the tempo up for a classic peak time progressive chugger. It's bulbous groove immediately gets your head bobbing while siren-like motifs and dark stabs steal the air. The main break strips the piece down to a cavernous pit of atmospheric drones and bleepy electronics, playing off each other perfectly to maximum dramatic effect and ultimately setting up a driving conclusion. Definitely one for those peak time moments, it rounds out what is a sensational Flow Vinyl debut for Chris who continues to impress. Highly recommended.
