Betoko & Paul Sawyer – I’ll Be Here Remixes [ICONYC]

The latest release from John Johnson's ICONYC finds the label presenting new interpretations of 'I'll Be There' by Paul Sawyer. It was the Betoko remix which first saw the light of day, originally released in July of 2019 as part of the label's Essentials Summer Edition collection. A standout on the release, it found the UK veteran reshaping the piece into a feel good summer anthem, complete with great harmonics and emotive male vocals. Now with the 2020 spring season underway ICONYC invites blaktone, Tony Casanova and MXV to re-imagine the track.

Russian duo blaktone make their label debut and lead the release off following well received outings for JEAHMON!, Selador and Sincopat. Much loved for their cross pollination of progressive house and techno, blaktone take 'I'll Be There' into the darker realms of that spectrum. Buzzing tones and fiery electronics lead the way here with a reprocessed vocal slowly being worked into the dramatic narrative. Coming to full fruition during the main break, the vocal eventually melts down into a mind bending array of sonic artifacts, before a groovy drop sets the course for a strong finale.

Also making his label debut is German artist and Radikon boss Tony Casanova. The Berlin resident now brings his cutting edge sounds to 'I'll Be Here' with great results. Backed by a warm, spacious groove, the German artist’s quirky lead, finely tuned percussion and indistinct take on the vocal elements appease the senses quite nicely. With a flair for the dramatic, granular atmospheres dominate the main break as tasteful modulation on the lead cues a classy apex before dropping out into a chunky final act.

Rounding out the release and providing the third and final interpretation of 'I'll Be Here' is MXV. Hailing from London, the UK artist first appeared in November of 2018 with a release on Gabriel Ananda’s Soulful Techno Records. 2019 saw further successes with quality outings for Balkan Connection, Droid9, ICONYC and Soundteller Records before beginning 2020 with a release on Ziger's Eat My Hat imprint. Now returning to ICONYC, MXV takes 'I'll Be Here' into peak time territory. Taking a cue from the original, MXV beefs the framework up for a tough yet emotive cut primed for dance floor destruction. The first act creates a dark narrative through astral designs and charged rhythms, before opening up an emotional reservoir as the vocal elements slowly get teased in as the main break commences. Reflective yet astral it’s a gorgeous centrepiece, creating a unique blend of tense and impassioned moments, perfectly setting up a smooth atmospheric finale. it rounds out a strong remix edition for ICONYC who have made some great choices on this release. Highly recommended.
