Ryan Sullivan’s Triplefire Music returns with the debut release of Ben Tov. Long regarded as one of South Africa’s premiere electronic music imprints, Triplefire has been responsible for uncovering some of the country’s freshest talent. Their latest finds Cape Town’s Ben Tov making his label debut. With this new name comes a wealth of experience and history in electronic music having released on Lonya’s Asymmetric Recordings under his Dino Live alias. Now showcasing his first material under Ben Tov, the South African artist presents his first single alongside remixes from Wulfsohn, Snake and TAKO.

When starting a new alias you certainly want to make a statement and Ben Tov has definitely done that with ‘Delirium’. Genres get blurred with remarkable expertise as crunchy rhythms and poignant melodies converge for the perfect marriage of progressive house and techno. The production is warm and full of ultrasonic character but what’s most compelling here is how well crafted the storyboard is. Smooth and effortless yet dynamic and tense it could be considered a throwback to the pixie days of James Holden and Luke Chable, but with it’s modern flair it ends up being so much more than that.

The remixer selection offers some of South Africa’s finest up and coming talent, beginning with Wulfsohn. The Cape Town resident is well known as a DJ in city’s burgeoning nightlife and now makes his production debut with a great rendition of ‘Delirium’. A funky, mildly acidic bassline immediately grabs your attention with it’s buoyant, elastic like qualities. Esoteric effects and waves of vibrant percussion add nicely to a strong rhythmic core. Not without emotive moments, the main break does add a reflective mood. Although brief, it’s proves to be the perfect energy bridge to a purring final act.

Up next is another fresh South African talent in Snake. Coined after the ‘AfrikaBurn’ gatherings that take place in the Tankwa Karroo desert, his interpretation maintains the main themes from the original while bringing a modern melodic flair, with tranquil arps and a percussive cadence that grows in waves. As the first act builds to a hearty sizzle, smooth harmonics pave the way into a second act. Here a storyboard of subtle yet powerful modulation does just enough to heighten the senses before a fiery finale ensues.

The release concludes with TAKO also making his production debut and delivering an excellent complement to the previous three versions. Stripped and punchy from the outset it’s organic percussion brings a slight afro influence while hopeful pads and clap clusters add bounce and emotion. Smooth chord changes advance the storyboard into timeless territory before a stripped down middle section resets your emotions for a impassioned conclusion. It rounds out a release with essentially four artist debutants, proving that South Africa boasts some of electronic music’s finest up and coming talent. A fresh and exciting release from Ryan Sullivan’s Triplefire Music that comes highly recommended.
